ISLAMABAD – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide weather advisory, warning of possible river flooding, flash floods and urban flooding in several parts of Pakistan between July 19 and July 23 due to an active monsoon system coupled with a strong westerly weather disturbance.
The NDMA said that the intensified weather pattern is expected to bring widespread rainfall from July 20 to July 23, particularly affecting Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper Punjab. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in several areas, increasing the likelihood of flooding in rivers, streams and low-lying urban centres.
The authority said there is a significant risk of flash floods and hill torrents in the mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir, where intense rainfall could trigger rapid rises in water levels. Residents living near rivers, streams and vulnerable slopes have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
The NDMA also warned that River Chenab at Marala and the upper reaches of River Jhelum near Mangla may experience increased water flows, raising the possibility of flood surges in these areas. Local administrations have been instructed to closely monitor the situation and take precautionary measures to protect nearby communities.
In addition to river flooding, the authority cautioned that major cities and low-lying localities could experience urban flooding as heavy rainfall may overwhelm drainage systems, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Citizens have been urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and to stay away from overflowing drains and nullahs.
Emergency response agencies, provincial disaster management authorities and district administrations have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure the availability of rescue personnel, machinery and relief equipment in vulnerable areas.
The NDMA has advised the public to stay updated through official weather alerts, follow instructions issued by local authorities and take necessary safety precautions until the current spell of heavy rainfall subsides later this week.
