The IT sector has achieved another encouraging milestone with its exports reaching a record $4.6 billion in FY26, registering a 21 per cent growth. The steady expansion of Pakistani IT firms into the MENAP region and European markets is a positive indication that the country’s technology industry is gradually strengthening its global footprint.
The 21 per cent increase is undoubtedly significant and deserves appreciation. However, it must also be viewed in perspective. Despite this progress, Pakistan continues to lag far behind regional competitors, particularly India, whose IT exports have crossed $200 billion mark. The comparison highlights not a lack of talent, but the vast untapped potential that Pakistan has yet to fully harness. Our greatest strength lies in youthful population. The country’s IT professionals, software developers and freelancers have repeatedly demonstrated their competence and competitiveness in international markets. Our youth are second to none in terms of talent and innovation. What they require is an enabling environment that provides opportunities, facilitates entrepreneurship and removes unnecessary obstacles to business growth.
While the government’s emphasis on promoting the IT sector is a step in the right direction, much more needs to be done to unlock its true potential. Greater investment should be made in advanced IT education, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and emerging technologies so that graduates possess skills demanded by the global market.
Access to venture capital and financing for technology startups should be expanded, while regulatory procedures for IT companies should be simplified. Equally important is ensuring policy consistency, facilitating the smooth repatriation of export earnings and promoting IT services more aggressively in international markets through trade missions and technology exhibitions. The latest export figures should be viewed as the beginning of a much larger journey towards making Pakistan a major global technology hub.
