Argentina and Spain will face off in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, amid air quality concerns caused by smoke drifting from Canadian wildfires.
Defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, are aiming to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup successfully. Spain, meanwhile, is chasing their second world title after lifting the trophy in 2010.
Tournament officials said they are closely tracking the impact of wildfire smoke, which has spread across large parts of the United States in recent days.
Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House World Cup Task Force, said organisers were working with the National Weather Service to assess conditions.
“We’re monitoring the situation closely,” Giuliani said during a media briefing, noting that weather experts are stationed at FIFA headquarters to provide updates.
More than 80,000 fans are expected to attend the final, including US President Donald Trump, who will make his only appearance at the tournament. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is also set to attend after receiving an invitation from Trump.
Spain captain Rodri said he expects a demanding and physical contest against Argentina but insisted his side is prepared for any challenge.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner said the final would present a different test from Spain’s previous matches, highlighting his team’s ability to adjust its style of play depending on the situation.
“We know how to adapt,” the Manchester City midfielder said. “Whether it’s defending, counter-attacking or controlling possession, this team is capable of handling different types of matches.”
Asked whether he anticipated Argentina using psychological tactics or attempting to provoke Spain’s players, Rodri replied that such behaviour is simply part of football.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni urged supporters to cherish the opportunity to watch Messi play in another World Cup final, praising the 39-year-old captain for his remarkable legacy.
“He has made history. He is a legend,” Scaloni said of the former Barcelona star, who guided Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.
