The United States carried out a new wave of airstrikes on Iran early Sunday, shortly after the US military confirmed the killing of two American service members in Jordan.
In response, Iran launched drone attacks on two US military installations in Kuwait.
According to a statement broadcast by Iranian state television, the country’s armed forces conducted large-scale kamikaze drone operations targeting the US ammunition depot at Camp Udairi, along with the Patriot missile radar and air surveillance systems at Ali Al Salem Air Base.
Before the latest US operation, Iran’s Supreme Leader warned that Washington would face consequences for what he described as efforts to further escalate the conflict.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the airstrikes began at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time (2200 GMT) on the orders of President Donald Trump. It stated that the operation was intended to further reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and to punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces accused of attacking US personnel in Jordan the previous night.
CENTCOM later confirmed that the strikes had concluded, saying they targeted Iranian coastal surveillance systems and air defence installations. It did not disclose additional operational details.
Iranian media reported multiple locations being struck. Mehr News Agency said a US attack near Sirik in southern Iran caused no casualties or damage to infrastructure. Tasnim News Agency reported that US forces also targeted an area near Shadegan, close to the Iraqi border, while at least six missiles reportedly struck Qeshm Island.
CENTCOM said the two US military deaths occurred on Friday, while another service member remains missing. The latest casualties raise the number of American personnel killed since the US-Israeli campaign against Iran began to 16, with more than 420 others reported injured.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth paid tribute to the fallen troops in a post on X, saying, “Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.”
On Saturday, Iran expanded its retaliation by launching attacks against US allies in the Gulf and Jordan after American strikes hit Iranian bridges, power infrastructure and other strategic facilities.
In a statement shared through official channels and Iranian state media, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said recent US actions proved that President Trump’s commitments were “utterly worthless and devoid of credibility.” He warned that the US should expect even greater losses and humiliation if the confrontation continued.
Senior military adviser Major General Mohsen Rezaei also warned that Tehran would escalate its military campaign if US strikes persisted, saying Iran would no longer confine itself to proportional retaliation and was prepared to resume full-scale offensive operations.
