KARACHI – As monsoon rains are expected to arrive in Karachi and other parts of the country, K-Electric has urged residents to adopt precautionary measures and prioritise safety during the wet weather.
The power utility advised citizens to avoid electricity installations, particularly in areas where rainwater may accumulate, and to remain vigilant to minimise the risk of electrical accidents.
K-Electric said its operational teams have been placed on high alert to continuously monitor weather conditions and the city’s power supply. The company added that it is coordinating closely with the Pakistan Meteorological Department, district administrations and other civic agencies to ensure a timely response to changing weather conditions.
The utility said it has completed preventive maintenance and repair work across its feeder network as part of its monsoon preparedness plan. It also carried out detailed inspections at grid stations, replacing faulty connectors and busbars to improve the reliability of electricity transmission.
According to K-Electric, the company has invested more than Rs1.2 billion in safety and infrastructure upgrades to strengthen its distribution network. The completed works include the replacement of more than 1,100 electricity poles and several transformer structures, earthing of over 2,200 service brackets, and the replacement of meters and busbars in 241 multi-storey buildings.
The company also converted five kilometres of overhead power lines into underground cables, installed insulators on thousands of pole stay units, and replaced circuit breakers and distribution boards at more than 250 transformers.
K-Electric spokesperson Imran Rana said public cooperation is essential for ensuring safety during the monsoon season.
“Operational preparedness alone is not enough. Responsible public behaviour and strict adherence to safety guidelines are equally important to reduce risks and protect lives during the rainy season,” he said.
The utility advised residents to maintain a safe distance from electricity poles, service brackets, meters, and damaged or hanging power and internet cables, especially in waterlogged areas. It also urged people not to touch rain-damaged electrical switches or wiring inside their homes and to report any electricity-related emergency immediately.
