ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said a historic breakthrough between the US and Iran is now closer than ever, revealing that a major peace agreement could be finalized within the next 24 hours amid rising tensions in the Gulf region.
In a post on X, PM Sharif said Pakistan is already preparing for the electronic signing of the landmark accord immediately after negotiations conclude, while technical-level discussions are expected to begin next week. The dramatic announcement came through a statement posted on X, where Sharif described the ongoing talks as a critical step toward lasting peace in the region.
“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before,” the premier said, while thanking both Washington and Tehran for maintaining dialogue during the high-stakes negotiations.
He also praised regional allies for their diplomatic support and expressed confidence that the expected agreement could lay the foundation for long-term stability across the Middle East.
The diplomatic momentum intensified further after Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held discussions with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis regarding the rapidly developing situation. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, both sides welcomed the encouraging progress in negotiations between the United States and Iran and voiced optimism about restoring peace and security in the region. The two ministers also agreed to remain in close coordination as developments unfold.
As optimism surrounding the potential agreement, tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz continued to escalate dramatically. Only hours after those remarks, fresh military action rattled the region. US forces intercepted and destroyed multiple Iranian one-way attack drones that were reportedly heading toward the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command later confirmed the operation and reassured the international community that the vital shipping lane remained open for maritime traffic.
Meanwhile, Iranian media outlets reported explosions near Sirik port and Qeshm Island along the strait, sparking fears of further escalation. Residents and local officials claimed Iranian forces fired warning shots at vessels allegedly attempting to pass through the area without authorization from the IRGC navy, adding another layer of tension to an already volatile situation.
