A fault in K-Electric’s power cable has triggered a disruption in Karachi’s water supply system, leading to a major shortfall across the city, officials said on Sunday.
According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), the outage at the North East Karachi (NEK) Pumping Station occurred after a breakdown in the main electricity cable supplied by K-Electric, severely affecting pumping operations.
The disruption has resulted in a water shortfall of around 54 million gallons per day (MGD), with officials warning that the situation could worsen if the fault is not repaired promptly.
KWSC said electricity supply to the NEK station was abruptly suspended in the early hours of May 31, forcing a partial shutdown of the K-II pumping system and reducing overall water distribution capacity.
Although engineers managed to restore limited power through an alternate feeder, the available capacity was not sufficient to fully resume pumping operations.
At present, multiple pumping units across K-II and K-III stations are operating below capacity, while some facilities remain completely non-functional due to the outage.
The utility has urged K-Electric to carry out urgent repairs and fully restore power supply to prevent further deterioration in water availability across the city.
KWSC added that it is closely monitoring the situation and utilising available resources to stabilise water distribution in affected areas.
