Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to promoting global peace through its continued participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations.
In his message marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, observed worldwide today, the PM said Pakistan’s longstanding involvement in UN missions reflects its firm commitment to international peace, security, and multilateral cooperation.
He paid tribute to the military, police, and civilian personnel serving under the UN banner, acknowledging their courage and sacrifices in conflict-hit regions around the world.
PM Shehbaz noted that the annual observance honours the invaluable role played by peacekeepers in maintaining global stability and protecting vulnerable communities.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” he said it highlights the need for sustained political will and financial backing to ensure lasting peace and safeguard human lives globally.
He also recalled that the occasion marks the establishment of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO), the first UN peacekeeping mission launched in Palestine in 1948.
The PM said more than two million individuals have served in over 70 UN peace missions throughout history, adding that Pakistan remains among the leading and longest-serving contributors to these operations.
He stated that since 1960, Pakistan has deployed over 235,000 personnel, including more than 500 women peacekeepers, across 48 UN missions worldwide. Pakistan currently ranks as the fifth-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts, he added.
PM Shehbaz praised the dedication and professionalism of peacekeepers serving across the globe, while honouring the sacrifices made by personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. He noted that over 4,400 UN peacekeepers, including more than 181 Pakistanis, have embraced martyrdom while serving humanity and global peace.
The prime minister said Pakistan takes great pride in its martyrs and in all those who continue to represent the country with commitment and resolve in advancing peace, stability, and the protection of civilians in different parts of the world.
