The federal government has sought expressions of interest from potential investors for the privatisation of three major power distribution companies.
The government intends to sell between 51 and 100 per cent shares in Faisalabad Electric Supply Company, Gujranwala Electric Power Company, and Islamabad Electric Supply Company. The selected investors will also be granted management control of the companies as part of the privatisation process.
The deadline for submitting expressions of interest for FESCO is July 7, 2026, while applications for GEPCO will be accepted until August 6, 2026. Interested parties seeking to acquire IESCO can submit bids by September 7, 2026.
The Privatisation Commission stated that applicants must pay a non-refundable processing fee of Rs 1.4 million for each company. An online briefing session regarding the transaction process is scheduled for June 3, 2026, through Zoom.
FESCO currently supplies electricity to nearly 5.7 million consumers across central Punjab. GEPCO serves several districts, including Gujranwala, Narowal, Hafizabad and Sialkot, whereas IESCO provides power to around 4.1 million consumers in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Azad Kashmir.
The government says the privatisation drive is aimed at attracting fresh investment and easing the burden of circular debt in the power sector. Analysts believe the move could draw interest from both domestic and foreign investors amid mounting financial losses and rising debt within the energy industry.
