President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have reiterated the government’s resolve to protect press freedom on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.
This year’s observance is being held under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace.”
Both leaders highlighted that responsible journalism, factual reporting, and credible information are essential for strengthening democracy, promoting national unity, and ensuring an enabling environment for media freedom.
In his message, President Zardari extended greetings to journalists and media workers around the world while drawing attention to growing global challenges facing press freedom. He pointed to rising concerns such as misinformation, disinformation, misuse of artificial intelligence, algorithm-driven manipulation, and pressure from major technology and social media platforms.
He warned that such influences can distort public understanding and undermine democratic principles. Reaffirming constitutional guarantees under Articles 19 and 19-A, he said a free press remains vital for transparency, accountability, and democratic governance.
Referring to Pakistan’s response during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, he commended the media for countering misinformation and helping maintain national cohesion. He also paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives while reporting the truth and called for improved safety and working conditions for media professionals.
He urged citizens to reject false narratives and support credible reporting, while asking both federal and provincial authorities to strengthen legal protections and ensure safer working environments for journalists.
In a separate message, PM Shehbaz also paid tribute to journalists and media professionals globally, acknowledging their contribution to an informed society. He said authentic, balanced, and verified reporting forms the backbone of journalism.
The PM cautioned media workers against the spread of propaganda, fake news, and unverified content, stating that responsible journalism plays a key role in promoting peace by shaping informed public opinion and improving international understanding.
He also honoured journalists who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty and stressed the need to adapt to digital changes while maintaining credibility and ethical standards. Warning about the growing threat of disinformation, he urged journalists to prioritise verification, integrity, and professionalism.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to a safe and supportive media environment, he said the press can contribute positively to international relations, economic growth, and social harmony. He added that while speed is important in the digital age, it must never come at the cost of accuracy, as public trust remains the foundation of journalism.
