THE murder of a prominent businessman of Islamabad sent shock waves among residents of the capital but the speed with which the Capital Territory police arrested the culprits is widely being appreciated as a professional achievement of the force.
Aamir Safdar Awan was murdered during a robbery at his farmhouse in the Orchard Scheme on March 29, 2026 but Islamabad IGP Ali Nasir Rizvi and his team nabbed the suspects in less than 24 hours with the help of Safe City, M-Tag and advanced technology.
This is not a mere achievement in terms of instant arrest of the gang of criminals but will serve as deterrence against crimes in the Federal Capital. The prompt nabbing of those involved in the heinous crime is a message that the ICT Police has attained professional capabilities to track criminals instantly with the help of technology. As pointed out by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had made fundamental decisions regarding law and order in Islamabad, which have started bearing fruits now. Previously, Safe City systems covered only a quarter of the city and the Islamabad Police faced resource constraints and this aspect has been taken care of with the active interest of the Minister and the incumbent IGP. The Safe City project is expected to be fully operational this year, with the forensic lab nearing completion. The relevancy of the measures initiated by the Minister and the IGP is highlighted by the fact that cases including the Sana Yusuf murder, Hamza murder and the killing of a foreign woman were also traced within hours. All suspects involved in high-profile cases in Islamabad have been apprehended and compared to last year, crime rates in the capital have significantly declined. While appreciating the performance of the police, we will urge that it should also properly utilize the technology to trace and bust gangs involved in car-lifting and street crimes.
