Recently, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar delivered Pakistan’s National Statement at the 69th Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear technology for sustainable development and global cooperation. At a side event, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi commended Pakistan’s achievements in expanding its civil nuclear energy capacity, reflecting international recognition of the country’s nuclear safety and security record.

Global demand for clean, reliable and cost-effective energy has increased amid climate change and disruptions like the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Nuclear energy offers advantages over fossil fuels and some renewable sources. Recognized worldwide as vital for sustainable development, nuclear energy directly supports SDG-7 (affordable and clean energy) and contributes to other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Pakistan’s civilian nuclear program significantly contributes to the national energy mix, currently providing 3,530 megawatts from six Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), accounting for 18.3% of total energy. Pakistan aims to expand its nuclear capacity to 8,800 megawatts by 2030, directly advancing SDG-7 and overall sustainable development. The recent Chashma Nuclear Power Project Unit-5 (C-5), developed with China, marks a significant milestone. NPPs generate large amounts of clean electricity with minimal land use, supporting SDG-15 (Life on Land), SDG-9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG-11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

Climate change poses urgent challenges, including water scarcity, food insecurity, biodiversity loss and natural disasters. Pakistan, highly vulnerable to climate impacts, uses nuclear technology to enhance agricultural productivity, reduce post-harvest losses of 25–30% and improve food security, contributing to SDG-1 (no poverty), SDG-2 (zero hunger) and SDG-6 (clean water and sanitation). Stress-resistant crops, pest control, water conservation technologies and farmer education are among the nuclear-assisted initiatives.

Nuclear technology also addresses health challenges, particularly cancer, which is increasingly prevalent in Pakistan. PAEC has established 20 Atomic Energy Cancer Hospitals providing diagnostic and therapeutic services free or at subsidized rates, advancing SDG-3 (good health and well-being) and promoting awareness for early detection and treatment under the IAEA slogan, “Cancer Care for All.”

Furthermore, PAEC promotes education and gender equality through science and technology institutions, supporting SDG-4 (quality education) and SDG-5 (gender equality). These initiatives encourage youth, particularly women, to engage in science and technology, fostering national capacity and inclusive development.

In conclusion, Pakistan’s safe and efficient use of nuclear technology significantly contributes to socio-economic growth, energy security and sustainable development. Nuclear energy supports long-term sustainable development, ensures reliable and stable energy supply, mitigates carbon emissions and enhances national resilience against climate challenges, exemplifying Pakistan’s commitment to achieving SDGs 2030.
