Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement that Pakistan has become the first country to implement Digital Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) initiative launched by World Economic Forum and the Digital Cooperation Organisation is a significant step toward positioning the country at the forefront of global digital economy. The Digital FDI project aims to enhance Pakistan’s infrastructure, foster digitisation and increase export of digital services making it an important milestone for an economy that seeks to modernise and align itself with global technological advancements.

This brings with it the promise of attracting foreign investment into key sectors that are essential for our digital progress. As the world increasingly shifts towards a digital-first economy, the importance of integrating technology into every sector cannot be overstated. For Pakistan, this move to leverage digital infrastructure is crucial in building an investment-friendly environment that is increasingly attractive to foreign capital.

In this context, digital technology offers both a solution and an opportunity. By creating right framework, we can not only enhance our digital capabilities but also lay foundation for sustainable economic prosperity. While, it is clear that the country is heading for right direction, there is still a long way to go. For digital transformation to succeed, reliable Internet connectivity and an improved online experience for users must be prioritised. This is the bedrock on which future of digital industries, IT exports and tech-driven businesses depend.

For tech businesses to thrive and attract foreign investors, they need a reliable, fast and seamless Internet experience. Therefore, government must continue to focus on improving Internet reliability. Such measures will not only enhance country’s competitiveness in the global digital space but will also be key to growing IT exports that have immense potential for contributing to national economy. This requires sustained investment, careful planning and solid commitment while ensuring that necessary digital tools are in place to support this growth.

Moreover, completion of the spectrum auction as per schedule holds significant importance in unlocking full potential of digital economy. The timely allocation of frequencies will provide necessary bandwidth to improve connectivity and enable smoother transitions to higher-speed networks that are essential for both businesses and consumers. With right measures in place, there is little doubt that Pakistan can emerge as a strong player in the global digital arena.
