The European Union, the European Investment Bank (EIB), and other international financial institutions have approved collaborative investments in Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) projects. The initiative aims to enhance KW&SC’s self-sufficiency while reducing its reliance on the Sindh government. According to KW&SC spokespersons, a high-level delegation from the European Investment Bank is scheduled to visit Karachi in February. During the visit, joint projects with the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will also be reviewed.

The delegation’s focus will be on constructing water treatment plants in Pipri, Gharo, and Hub. The European Union has expressed interest in renewable energy initiatives to improve KW&SC’s energy efficiency. Additionally, technical assistance is expected to reduce non-revenue water losses and strengthen field staff capabilities. KW&SC CEO Engineer Syed Salahuddin Ahmed described this development as a landmark achievement, stating, “For the first time, a water utility in Pakistan is benefiting from European Union investment.” He added that a $100 million investment proposal with the EIB has been submitted, with negotiations planned for April 2025 involving both provincial and federal governments.

The investment aligns with Karachi’s ongoing institutional reforms, focusing on improving water supply, ensuring environmental sustainability, and promoting economic growth for its residents. Officials emphasized that these initiatives would reduce KW&SC’s dependency on the Sindh government for electricity. The EIB, which has invested over €94 billion globally, will play a crucial role in introducing renewable energy solutions to enhance KW&SC’s operational efficiency.
