Jamaat-e-Islami staged protests at 15 different locations across Karachi on Saturday, protesting the severe water crisis caused by the incompetence of the Sindh government, the occupying mayor, and the Water Corporation. The protesters demanded that water be provided to citizens through taps instead of tankers, the end of government backing for the tanker mafia, and the immediate completion of the K-IV water project.
The demonstrations were led by Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, including Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan and Sufyan Dilawar, who addressed the crowd. Monem Zafar Khan emphasized that Karachi’s citizens should receive water through taps, not expensive tankers, and called on the government to complete the K-IV project without delay. He warned that if the water supply was not resumed soon, Jamaat-e-Islami would announce a future course of action in consultation. Protesters raised slogans, demanding an end to “Karachi enmity,” calling for “Water, water,” and demanding the resignation of the Chairman Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, Murtaza Wahab.
They also highlighted that Karachi, which contributes a significant portion of the country’s taxes, remains deprived of basic water services. The protests also pointed out that for the past 15 days, Karachi’s residents have been struggling with a lack of water. The government has dug up roads under the guise of the “Red Line” project, leaving essential water supply lines unaddressed.
