ISLAMABAD – Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub strongly condemned the sentences announced by military courts for civilians in May 9 Cases.
Ayub, the key leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf made shocking announcement, as military courts sentenced 25 people for attacking sensitive installations in May 2023. Army media wing said 25 defendants were given sentences ranging from two to 10 years.
In a statement, Ayub emphasized that PTI rejects imposition of such sentences on citizens, asserting that military courts should not have jurisdiction over civilian cases.
He termed the punishment as violation of fundamental justice principles. “The detainees are civilians, and military courts are not authorized to hear their cases,” Ayub remarked.
This reaction comes after military courts sentenced 25 individuals involved in May 9 tragedy to imprisonment ranging from 2 to 10 years with hard labor. The sentencing of these criminals was carried out by military courts, sparking controversy over the use of military tribunals for civilians.
