The Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi, in collaboration with the Arts Council of Pakistan (ACP), Pakistan Japan Cultural Association (PJCA), and Pakistan Japan Business Forum (PJBF), hosted Japan Fest 2024, a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture, traditions, and values. Held at the Arts Council of Pakistan, the event brought the people of Karachi together in a unique cultural exchange, showcasing Japan’s rich heritage alongside its modern influences.
The festival featured a diverse array of activities and performances, including Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), Bonsai, Ju-Jitsu and Kendo demonstrations, a cosplay competition, and traditional Japanese dances such as Bon Odori. A highlight was a Sufi rock fusion concert by Wajji Ali and the Great Meeraas Band, blending the cultural sounds of Japan and Pakistan. Consul General of Japan, HATTORI Masaru, addressed the audience, expressing his gratitude for the warm reception and emphasizing the importance of fostering cultural ties between Japan and Pakistan.
“This year’s theme, Japan-Pakistan Fusion, aims to create a sense of familiarity and mutual understanding between our two nations,” he remarked. The event was graced by the Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, as the chief guest. In his speech, he praised the Japanese Consulate’s efforts in promoting cultural activities and offered Frere Hall as the venue for Japan Fest 2025. “While Japan is a leader in technology and innovation, its deep appreciation for culture and heritage offers valuable lessons for Pakistan,” he added. Notable attendees included Sadia Rashid, President of PJCA; Murtaza Mandviwalla, Chairman of PJBF; and Ahmed Shah, President of ACP, alongside other dignitaries and cultural enthusiasts. The festival also featured a Kathak performance by Ms. Ishii, highlighting the beautiful interplay of Japanese and Pakistani artistic traditions.
Attendees enjoyed traditional Japanese games, culinary delights, and artistic exhibitions, making the event a complete cultural immersion. The Consulate-General of Japan extended heartfelt thanks to all participants and partners for making Japan Fest 2024 a success, underscoring its commitment to strengthening cultural bonds. The event exemplified the enduring friendship between Japan and Pakistan, promising further collaboration and cultural exchange in the future.
