IN a significant move that could reshape Pakistan’s economic future, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was presented with a detailed plan aimed at boosting the country’s IT exports to $25 billion within the next five years. The plan targets $15 billion from IT exports, $1 billion from telecom exports and $10 billion from digitalization initiatives. These goals, while audacious, offer a blueprint for addressing some of the country’s most pressing economic challenges, especially if the plan is executed with the urgency and commitment it demands.
At present, our IT exports remain modest in comparison to a country in our neighbourhood. If India can achieve such success, there is no reason why Pakistan cannot, especially given the extraordinary potential and talent of its youth. In fact, Pakistani youth have already begun to make a mark on the global IT scene, with software developers, freelancers and tech entrepreneurs gaining recognition for their skill and innovation. However, the country has yet to create the infrastructure, education and support necessary to fully harness this potential. The IT sector is not only one of the fastest-growing industries globally but also one of the most resilient. Unlike traditional industries, IT services and digital businesses are less dependent on physical resources and can thrive in a globalized world where borders are less relevant. For Pakistan, this could be a game-changer. By bolstering IT exports, the country can address some of its most critical challenges, including trade deficit, unemployment and a lack of foreign exchange reserves. We must focus on providing youth with the international-standard education and training required to excel in areas such as software development, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and digital marketing. This is where the Prime Minister’s directive to the HEC to prepare a comprehensive plan becomes crucial. The IT sector represents the future, and if Pakistan can capitalize on its potential, it can secure a position as a global leader in digital services.
