LAHORE – Punjab authorities on Thursday requested for deployment of Rangers in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, and Attock to maintain law and order to deal with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters.

Ahead of the PTI protest on November 24, law enforcement agencies planned to seal off 50 key points in the city using freight containers, razor wire, and barbed wire to prevent PTI supporters from reaching the federal capital.

In this regard, Interior Ministry has been approached to ensure the smooth conduct of the demonstration and prevent any disruptions. The deployment involves two wings of Rangers in Rawalpindi and Attock starting from November 22 for an indefinite period, while in Jhelum, Rangers will be stationed from November 22 to 27.

Attock, Rawalpindi and several other cities saw imposition of Section 144 across district, effectively banning all forms of gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, and processions. The display of weapons has also been prohibited under the same law.

Rawalpindi imposed similar restriction until November 26, prohibiting any assembly of more than four people in response to the planned PTI protest in Islamabad.

Earlier, the government decided to deploy Rangers in Islamabad on November 24 to assist local authorities in managing the protest.
