Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, alongside Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad and M.D. Water Corporation Asadullah Khan, officially inaugurated the refurbished Jamila Street Pumping Station after extensive repair and renovation.
The ceremony was attended by various political leaders, including Member of Provincial Assembly Muhammad Yousuf Baloch and PPP leaders. Speaking at the event, Mayor Wahab announced that the capacity of the Jamila Street Pumping Station had been increased from 9 million gallons to 17 million gallons. This significant upgrade will help alleviate long-standing sewage issues in several areas of Karachi, including Old City, Saddar, Lyari, and Garden. Wahab highlighted that previous leader, despite being elected from these areas, had failed to address the region’s infrastructural challenges. However, after listening to local residents’ concerns, the authorities successfully completed the project, which included the installation of five new imported pumps and standby generators to tackle load-shedding issues. This improvement will ensure smooth sewage water disposal in the area.
The mayor also praised Lyari as the “crown of the city,” reaffirming his commitment to ongoing efforts to improve the area and provide relief to its residents.
He reflected on the progress made in nearby Cheel Chowk, once considered an inaccessible area, now revitalized through the efforts of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Wahab stressed the importance of highlighting positive developments in the city, urging the media to focus on Karachi’s active development projects. He also addressed concerns over the city’s heritage, particularly the neglect of historical buildings, including the Jamila Street Pumping Station, which dates back to 1887. Mayor critiqued the inconsistent positions of the PTI, drawing attention to contradictions in their political stances, and reaffirmed the commitment of the Sindh government to improving Karachi’s infrastructure. He also condemned the misuse of land allocated to the Railways for tracks, noting the construction of housing societies, petrol pumps, and buildings in its place.
Additionally, he criticized entities like Port Qasim and Karachi Port Trust for using Karachi’s infrastructure without reinvesting in the city.
