The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched the “Justuju” project in Karachi, a new initiative aimed at fostering social cohesion and empowering local communities. Speaking at the launch event, USAID Mission Director Kate Somvongsiri highlighted that the project aligns with USAID’s commitment to the localization agenda, focusing on inclusive, equitable, and locally led solutions for sustainable development.

Somvongsiri explained that “Justuju” is designed to empower grassroots organizations, local government representatives, youth, women, and other vulnerable communities, enabling them to take leadership roles in decision-making processes.

The project aims to enhance social cohesion and promote peaceful coexistence within communities. Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui, expressed his support for the initiative, praising USAID, Chanan Development Association (CDA), and other partners for their timely efforts in bridging the gap between local government representatives and the citizens of Karachi.

He assured full cooperation from his office in the successful implementation of the project. Muhammad Shahzad Khan, Executive Director of CDA, shared that the organization has set up a Centre for Community Innovation in Karachi to provide capacity-building support to local actors. This center will help design context-specific social cohesion initiatives and pilot local solutions to address neighborhood-level challenges. The launch event was attended by U.S. Consul General Scott Urbom, representatives from various government departments, civil society organizations, and academia.

The event also featured a traditional cultural performance by the Sheedi community and Lyari underground rappers, showcasing the diverse local culture. “Justuju” is a three-year social cohesion initiative by USAID and CDA, focusing on engaging diverse local stakeholders at the community level to foster inclusive and sustainable measures for enhancing social unity and promoting peaceful coexistence.
