WASHINGTON – Democratic candidate Sarah McBride has become the first openly transgender person elected to the US House of Representatives, said projected results revealed by Edison Research.
The 34-year-old won election to Delaware’s at-large sea by defeating Republican Party’s John Whalen.
She became the first openly transgender person to serve as a state senator when she was elected in 2020. She also became the first openly transgender person to serve as intern at the White House in 2012, under Democratic former President Barack Obama.
In a Facebook post, McBride has thanked the Delaware for their support. She wrote: “Thank you, Delaware! Because of your votes and your values, I am proud to be your next member of Congress”.
“Delaware has sent the message loud and clear that we must be a country that protects reproductive freedom, that guarantees paid leave and affordable child care for all our families, that ensures that housing and health care are available to everyone and that this is a democracy that is big enough for all of us,” she added.
