PPP Senator Sarmad Ali voiced concern over the prevalence of false information on social media in Pakistan, claiming that “99% of false news is presented as truth” and that the culture of spreading misinformation is increasingly adopted by political parties.

He added that social media has become a platform where no politician’s dignity is safe from attacks. Senator Ali, representing the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), spoke as the chief guest on the final day of a workshop organized by the Women Media Center.

Recalling the legacy of Bhutto, he noted, “Bhutto Sahib went to the gallows but did not reveal nuclear secrets.” Senator Ali also criticized the absence of officials from Imran Khan’s government at Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan’s funeral, mentioning that only Murad Ali Shah had attended. Turning his focus to artificial intelligence, Senator Ali expressed concerns that AI is eroding critical thinking by making people overly dependent on quick answers from search engines rather than reading books and developing independent thought. The ten-day workshop in Karachi attracted numerous women journalists and media students, and concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony for the participants.
