Undemocratic & unrealistic strategy

As a special Parliamentary Committee convened to select the next Chief Justice under the newly passed constitutional amendments, the absence of PTI was striking. What remains unclear is why PTI opted for an ineffective boycott of government proceedings, despite being given ample opportunities to re-engage and fulfil their elected duty of representing the people. Understanding PTI’s strategy is like trying to predict the movement of a leaf in a strong wind, unpredictable, unguided, and erratic. The entire constitutional amendment process has exposed PTI’s irrational approach to the issue.

On one hand, they staged chaotic politics, street protests, challenging the authority of the state and threatening to sow discord between provinces. The recent statement of KPK’s CM Gandapur threatening to block the country is a step towards anarchy. Yet, when the constitutional amendment was finally presented, PTI meekly conceded, stating that while they fundamentally agreed with its content, they would not participate in the vote. This was another baffling decision and Hippocratic role in the legislative process. Apart from opting for a realistic, democratic gesture, what did the PTI achieve? Despite being involved in the consultation process for 26th Amendment and agreeing on most of the clauses, their sudden boycott raised questions and was disliked by most of the people.

However, this position appears confusing and short-sighted, seemingly fixated on the cult-like figure of Imran Khan, unable to move forward. It is regrettable that the opposition in this country relies solely on protests and street agitation, lacking any sense of diplomacy or compromise. PTI’s present agitating politics negates its commitment to the Judicial and democratic system. PTI must reconsider how it engages in politics and return to the role it was elected to fulfill.

Toxic smoke

It is worth appreciating that Chief Minister Mariam Nawaz, appears to be taking the issue of smog seriously, making concentrated efforts to address it. Lahore is already being shrouded by a thin layer of highly toxic smog which will only thicken as more smoke and burnt particles accumulate in the atmosphere, eventually forming a dense, hazardous blanket of pollutants.

This makes breathing Lahore’s air extremely unhealthy with the city and other urban areas in northern Punjab, including parts of Indian Punjab, often ranking among the worst in terms of air quality and pollution. Smog is also a cause of spreading epidemics like flu, cough and soaring of eyes. Due to this usual hazardous situation, we face every year, long-term measures are needed, such as eliminating crop stubble burning, phasing out vehicles with high polluted emissions and regulating factories and brick kilns to stagger their emissions, immediate solutions should be implemented.

One such measure is the use of cloud seeding and artificial rainfall technology to temporarily clear the smog before it worsens. Though cloud seeding is expensive, costing around 7 to 10 million rupees per operation, it offers an immediate benefit while the longer-term strategies are being rolled out.

It is hoped that this initiative will not be a one-off effort and that the Punjab government will continue to employ cloud seeding and other technologies to mitigate the impact of smog on Lahore and other parts of Punjab.

Protecting online communities

As online communities continue to grow and diversify, ensuring their safety and inclusivity is more crucial than ever. Here are some key strategies to protect these spaces for all members.

Creating a code of conduct helps set the tone for community interactions. These guidelines should outline acceptable behaviour, including rules against harassment, hate speech and discrimination. Make sure these rules are easily accessible and regularly updated.

However, encouraging a culture of respect is vital. Leaders and moderators should model positive interactions and actively promote kindness and understanding. Highlighting community achievements and positive contributions can reinforce a supportive environment.

Moreover, active moderation is essential for maintaining a safe space. Employ a team of moderators who can monitor discussions, enforce guidelines and address issues promptly. Consider using automated tools to help flag inappropriate content while ensuring that human oversight remains in place.

Furthermore, provide resources and training on online safety for community members. This includes information on privacy settings, reporting procedures and recognizing harmful behaviour. Empowering members to protect themselves and others fosters a sense of responsibility within the community. Have a plan in place for dealing with crises, such as harassment incidents or misinformation. Quick and decisive action can mitigate harm and maintain trust within the community. Regularly review and revise your crisis management strategies as needed.

Protecting online communities is an ongoing process that requires commitment from everyone involved.

By implementing clear guidelines, fostering a respectful culture and promoting safety education, we can create welcoming and secure spaces for all members. Together, we can cultivate vibrant online communities that thrive on respect and inclusivity.
