Pak connectivity struggles
In today’s fast-paced world, countries are rapidly improving their technological infrastructure. Many countries, notably South Korea, China and the United States, are leading the way in developing and deploying 5G technology. According to a survey published by the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), around 70 nations have already constructed 5G networks by June 2022. Meanwhile, the world is transitioning to even more powerful 6G networks.
In sharp contrast, Pakistan is still dealing with challenges relating to 4G connectivity. Since February 17, 2024, X (previously Twitter) has been inaccessible in Pakistan, and in the last week, major social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and even Snapchat have become inaccessible without the use of Virtual Private Networks. Basic WhatsApp functions, such as downloading or sending audio notes, have also been made inaccessible without a VPN. This position indicates a sad and alarming state of affairs, particularly given that the rest of the world is moving forward with newer technologies.
While the current government is focused on constitutional reforms, it appears that the important issue of internet outages has been ignored. In August 2024, the Pakistan Software House Association (P@SHA) warned that internet disruptions might cost Pakistan’s economy up to $300 million. This financial loss is something the government cannot afford, especially given its current economic challenges.

Construction waste
I am writing to highlight the urgent issue of construction waste in our community, particularly in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 1. As development projects increase, so does the amount of waste generated from construction sites. This situation not only leads to overflowing landfills but also results in environmental pollution that negatively impacts our health and local wildlife.
Unfortunately, many construction companies still rely on inadequate waste management practices. They often choose to dispose of material quickly instead of exploring sustainable options. Valuable resources like wood, metal and concrete frequently end up in landfills when they could be recycled or reused. Implementing stricter regulations and encouraging sustainable building practices can help mitigate this waste problem significantly. I urge local authorities to establish robust recycling programs for construction material and to offer incentives for builders who adopt eco-friendly methods. Additionally, raising community awareness about the importance of responsible waste management can foster a culture of sustainability among both contractors and residents. Together, we can work towards a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.

Praying the rosary
Not many of us Catholics actually venerate or revere our Blessed Mother Mary. Families today have no time to pray the rosary. And if ever it is prayed, the Our Fathers and the Hail Marys are recited just like parrots without any meaning at all because the Head of the family has just returned home from work and is tired. Besides, the wife has to prepare the dinner and the children have to watch their favourite serial on TV. October is the month of the rosary. Praying the family rosary daily will prevent such unhappy occurrences in the home which cause sadness for both parents and children and which often end in the destruction of the matrimonial bond.
The family rosary is one of the best prayers of the Catholic Church. Prayer is intended to raise the mind to God and to take our thoughts away from the passing affairs of this world. The rosary is long enough to engage our attention for a sufficient time to enable us to leave aside our worldly cares, and this is good for both the body and the soul. It can be said on a journey or even while engaged in our occupations which do not demand all our attention. The indulgences of the rosary are so great that the faithful ought to make use of this devotion for the relief of the poor souls in purgatory. The rosary is the devotion which belongs especially to Our Lady.

Larkana’s Railway Station
Once the pride of the city, Larkana’s railway station has lost its former allure. After years of neglect, I was dismayed to find the station in disarray during a recent visit. The train that was once packed with passengers now runs with sparse crowds and the absence of the bustling atmosphere was a stark contrast to its former glory.
Decades ago, trains were the preferred mode of transportation and tickets were hard to come by due to overwhelming demand. Now, the station lies dormant, with only a few people present, plagued by insufficient lighting, deserted platforms and overgrown vegetation. If left unattended, this once-thriving hub risks becoming a barren, decrepit haven for squatters. Urgent attention is needed to restore Larkana railway station’s charm and functionality.
