THE decision by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to establish three new provincial authorities focused on development, water and sanitation and horticulture marks a significant step toward improving essential services in the province. The creation of these authorities comes at a time when the challenges of urbanization, climate change and resource management are becoming increasingly pressing.

With the population in urban areas growing, the demand for effective sanitation and clean water has skyrocketed. The proposed authorities will play a critical role in devising innovative solutions to manage these resources, promoting sustainable practices and ensuring that essential services are delivered efficiently. However, while the focus on urban centres is vital, it is equally important to ensure that the needs of rural and remote areas are not overlooked. These areas often suffer from inadequate infrastructure, limited access to clean water and insufficient waste management systems. The establishment of the new authorities must include a comprehensive plan that prioritizes the needs of these underserved communities. A holistic approach to water and sanitation should encompass both urban and rural environments, ensuring that every person, regardless of their geographic location, has access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities. Establishing a robust mechanism for waste management, including regular garbage collection in rural areas, is crucial for maintaining a clean environment. A focus on sanitation is not just about health; it is also about dignity and quality of life. Clean surroundings contribute to the overall well-being of communities and can have a positive impact on public health outcomes. The success of these authorities will hinge on their ability to engage with local communities and stakeholders. It is essential to foster a participatory approach, where the voices of people are heard and considered in decision-making processes. This engagement can lead to tailored solutions that effectively address the unique challenges faced by different areas within Punjab.
