ISLAMABAD – The federal cabinet will hold a meeting today, Saturday, to mull over the proposed constitutional amendments after a draft was finalised after long deliberations and talks with the political parties.

A day earlier, it was announced that the government and opposition members have approved the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

The announcement came after the special committee formed to hold debate on the constitutional amendment package met in Islamabad with PPP leader Syed Khursheed Shah in the chair.

The meeting was attended by members of all political parties except Aimal Wali Khan.

The 26th amendment proposes formation constitutional bench in Supreme Court, involvement of parliament in appointment of chief justice of Pakistan, fixing CJP tenure to three years and overhauling Supreme Judicial Council.

The proposed amendment would be presented in Senate today if it is approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet.

Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced on Friday during a joint parliamentary party meeting that a consensus had been reached in the special parliamentary committee regarding Constitutional Amendments.

He highlighted that the attendance of PPP members in Parliament was better than that of any other party.

Bilawal expressed his gratitude to the members for being present in Islamabad for this crucial session, noting their hard work in achieving agreement on the Constitutional Amendments.
