LAHORE – Lahore College alleged rape incident sparked new controversy in Pakistan, and statements of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz added fuel to fire as it prompted strong response from feminist groups.

Amid online outrage, Aurat March demanded Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz apologyy as her comments about the alleged rape caused distress among survivors of sexual assault.

The organization – known for its annual rallies – called CM Maryam’s statement despicable and regressive. It further said the female CM is unfit to represent the region while disregarding the safety, rights, and dignity of survivors of sexual violence.

Aurat March specifically called out CM’s remarks about the purity of rape survivors, linking it with patriarchal belief. How can rape survivors rape are impure, saying it’s one of the reasons why women don’t report such things.

After recent developments, its more difficult for survivors to seek justice, the statement further said. In a presser, CM Maryam Nawaz clearly turned down rumors about an alleged on-campus rape, calling it a “fabricated story”. Meanwhile, people condemned CM’s comments for perpetuating outdated rape-apologist narratives and undermining the dignity of survivors.

The incident remained in spotlight this week, leading to protests by students, and clashes with police.
