SC disposes of petition against proposed 26th Constitutional amendment

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition against the proposed 26th Constitutional amendment after it was withdrawn by the petitioner.

The hearing regarding the appeal against the objections raised by the Registrar’s Office on the petition was conducted by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa.

Advocate Hamid Khan represented the petitioners in court when he informed the bench that they wanted to withdraw the petition.

The chief justice inquired whether the petitioners had engaged him [Hamid Khan] for the withdrawal, suggesting that Zubairi himself could have stated that. To this, Advocate Hamid Khan replied that he was appearing on behalf of all the petitioners.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition against the proposed constitutional amendment on the basis of its withdrawal.

Meanwhile, in a major breakthrough, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam -Fazl (JUI- F) ¬– all three developed consensus regarding the 26th constitutional amendment, the sources said on Wednesday.
