FAISALABAD – The leaders, representing minority communities, have criticized the lawmakers for their inability to introduce legislation aimed at safeguarding minority rights.
During a press conference in Faisalabad on Monday, Akmal Bhatti, Chairman of the Minorities Alliance Pakistan (MAP), expressed his discontent with the inaction of minority legislators, labeling it “shameful and unforgivable.”
Bhatti’s remarks precede a likely vote on the proposed constitutional amendment in both houses of parliament.
Discussing the forthcoming 26th Constitutional Amendment, Bhatti urged an end to constitutional discrimination faced by Pakistan’s approximately 10 million religious minorities. He highlighted the unequal status of minorities under the Constitution, noting that non-Muslims are barred from holding the positions of President or Prime Minister and are prohibited from practicing law in the Federal Shariat Court.
“The indifference of minority parliamentarians is intolerable, especially during this crucial time,” Bhatti remarked, accusing them of putting personal interests ahead of their communities’ rights.
He also condemned prominent political parties for disregarding the faith placed in them by minority voters. Bhatti called for amendments to Articles 36, 40, 51, 91, 106, and 203 of the Constitution to eliminate discriminatory provisions.
He warned of nationwide protests if the concerns and suggestions of the minority community are overlooked in the 26th Amendment. Bhatti appealed to President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and leaders of major political parties to address these issues.
Additionally, he cautioned that the MAP would convene a multi-party conference in Islamabad to advocate for reforms if prompt action is not taken to protect minority rights.
