NEW YORK – Bilateral Relations are on the rise between Pakistan and Bangladesh as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed expanding cooperation with Bangladesh Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at UNGA sidelines.
PM Sharif and Younus expressed their commitment to enhancing cooperation across diverse fields and the meeting comes at a time when relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan have shown signs of thawing, after exit of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Sharif’s meeting with Yunus took place at a ceremony celebrating 50 years of Bangladesh’s membership in the UN. Local media reported that the discussions were positive, focusing on promoting cooperation and expanding bilateral relations.
Dr. Yunus welcomed Sharif and his delegation, which included Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar. Earlier this month, Pakistan’s foreign office emphasized its desire for “robust, multifaceted, friendly relations” with Bangladesh to foster regional peace and stability.
Sharif’s visit to New York also aims to engage with global leaders on pressing issues such as terrorism, the Gaza conflict, and the Kashmir dispute.
Islamabad had a complicated relationship with Dhaka after Bangladesh gained independence. Tensions intensified during Hasina’s administration, especially with the prosecution of members of the JI party for war crimes related to the 1971 conflict.
