The District Administration of Islamabad in a landmark decision has declared the Weekly Bazaar located in the Sector H-9 plastic bag free. The measure has been taken to prevent the plastic pollution from taking over the city, disfiguring the city’s beauty and choking its water lines etc.

On the directions of the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad, Assistant Commissioner Industrial Area, Sunday visited the Weekly Bazaar and made sure no plastic shopping bag/envelopes were being sold/used there.

All the shopkeepers and stall owners were informed weeks prior to the enforcement of the order, an official of the ICT administration told Pakistan Observer. The weekly bazaar administration on the occasion briefed the Assistant Commissioner about the steps to ensure the ban on plastic remains enforced.

“We have declared the plastic shopping bags out-of-bounds and now there is no plastic under use here,” the district government officer was informed.

A large number of customers commended the banning of plastic in the weekly bazaar and hoped the ban would continue and would be applied on other weekly bazaars and markets of the federal capital. All over the world, plastic use is being discouraged and we see cloth bags or those made with organic fiber, said a female customer Rukhsana while talking to Pakistan observer.

Once the ban is enforced completely the citizens would get used to it and there would be no violation she hoped.

Sajjad, a regular shopper at the Weekly Bazaar also welcomed the banning of plastic saying plastic is a hazard and it takes hundreds of years to get dissolved.
