ISLAMABAD – Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman unequivocally rejected the government’s proposed constitutional amendments despite back to back meetings from ruling alliance members.

The controversy unfolded during a luncheon hosted by PTI leader Asad Qaiser. Maulana Fazlur Rehman mentioned that his attendance at the luncheon was largely due to the good hospitality provided by Qaiser.

The core of the meeting was the serious matter of the proposed amendments. Fazl criticized the amendments, calling them a betrayal of nation’s trust and asserting that any support for the amendments would be unacceptable.

Several other political issues, including current security situation in KP and Balochistan also come on table. Asad Qaiser emphasised the need for opposition unity and announced a forthcoming lawyers’ convention in Lahore to discuss and present various suggestions.

Both Qaiser and Rehman expressed their commitment to collaborating in Parliament, despite their opposition to the current draft of the amendments. Barrister Gohar Ali Khan clarified that the draft circulating was not the final version and reaffirmed that both parties had rejected it. He also addressed recent confusion, stating that statements attributed to Maulana Fazlur Rehman in prison had no connection to the PTI founder.
