ISLAMABAD – The Punjab government has withdrawn a subsidy of Rs14 per unit on electricity for consumers in Islamabad only due to an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had announced the massive relief for citizens of Punjab and Islamabad in electricity bills for August and September 2024 amid higher power tariff. Citizens, who consumed below 500 units, received subsidized bills for the month of August.

However, the latest development has deprived the Islamabad citizens from relief in electricity bills for the month of September 2024 as they have to pay full price of electricity.

According to a notification issued by the Islamabad Electric Supply Company, consumers in the federal capital will receive their September bills based on the electricity rates effective from July 1.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Zahid Bokhari confirmed the development to local media. She explained that the chief minister wanted to provide the subsidy to Islamabad’s consumers, however the agreement with the IMF prevented this relief from being granted.

However, the subsidy for consumers in Punjab will remain in place until September 30.
