German Consul General in Karachi Dr. Rüdiger Lotz, alongside MALC CEO Mervyn Lobo, undertook a visit to the outskirts of Tando Jan Mohammad, marking a significant gesture of solidarity and support for communities affected by the devastating 2022 floods. The visit was a poignant reminder of the devastation wrought by the floods two years prior, during which MALC’s healthcare center in Tando Jan Mohammad played a crucial role in providing medical care to the beleaguered population.

Dr. Lotz, reflecting on his previous visit during the crisis, commended MALC’s continued efforts: “The situation here was dire even before the floods, and MALC has been a lifeline. As German Consul General, I deeply value MALC’s ongoing work. Their dedication is essential for the health stability of this region. We extend our congratulations for their remarkable service.”

Dr. Lotz underscored the historical and enduring relationship between the German Consulate and MALC, a partnership dating back over 60 years to the era of Dr. Ruth Pfau. “Our support for MALC spans over six decades, rooted in the remarkable legacy of Dr. Pfau. This tradition exemplifies the strong bond between the people of Pakistan and Germany, supported by the generosity of German donors.” Lobo reflected on the significance of the visit, noting,

“The visit rekindles the memory of Dr. Ruth Pfau. Despite challenging conditions, like Dr. Pfau’s resolute spirit, we remained undeterred. This visit embodies the enduring German commitment to our mission. It was both a challenging and rewarding day, reaffirming our dedication to marginalized communities.” Upon arrival at the MALC healthcare center in Tando Jan Mohammad, the team was warmly welcomed with traditional ajrak and topi. The visit included a comprehensive tour and a briefing on the center’s critical healthcare services, followed by a ceremony to distribute wheelchairs to those in need.

The day’s itinerary also included a trip to Haji Khan Village, Taluka Jhudo, District Mirpurkhas, where the team was greeted by forty adults and their children. This visit marked the official handover of 31 newly constructed one-room houses, designed to offer robust and secure shelter. These homes stand as a symbol of hope and recovery for a community striving to rebuild their lives after the floods. In a gesture of solidarity, Dr. Lotz and the MALC team joined the villagers in planting new trees, further signifying the renewal and growth of the area.

The villagers expressed heartfelt gratitude for their new homes and the opportunity to start anew, signaling a hopeful future despite the challenges faced. The day, filled with joy and gratitude, highlighted the resilience of the human spirit and the power of continued support in the wake of disaster. The visit underscored the vital role of international partnerships and local efforts in facilitating recovery and rebuilding lives in the aftermath of such crises.
