ISLAMABAD – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday postponed local body elections in capital city scheduled for September 29.

The delay comes after Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2024 was approved by parliament.  The amendment introduces an increase in the number of wards within Islamabad’s union councils, necessitating the indefinite postponement of the elections.

The country’s electoral watchdog updated its list of 166 registered political parties, including changes to the leadership of several parties, such as recognizing Mian Nawaz Sharif as the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Naeem-ur-Rehman Khan as Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Under latest amendment, Mehmood Khan is now listed as Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Parliamentarian, while Asif Zardari continues as the President of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian, with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party. Asfandiar Wali Khan remains the president of the Awami National Party.
