Former PPP senator SassuiPalijo has delivered a sharp rebuke against the proposed amendments to the IRSA Act 2024, asserting that they will aggravate the already contentious water distribution problems in Sindh.
Addressing the media, Palijo argued that the amendments would significantly expand the Prime Minister’s powers, including the ability to appoint an arbitrary individual as IRSA chairman. She described this move as unacceptable and a threat to the fairness of water distribution, which could lead to severe consequences for Sindh. Palijo highlighted that Sindh is already grappling with inadequate water supply due to the non-implementation of the 1991 water agreement. According to her, the amendments will further marginalize the province, undermining its access to water and financial resources.
She called on Sindh’s representatives to staunchly oppose the amendments, warning that the people of Sindh will not tolerate further injustices and are prepared to defend their rights. Palijo’s concerns were echoed by other Sindh leaders, including Khurshid Shah and Naveed Qamar, who pledged to oppose the amendments.
