Flood devastates crops in S Punjab Govt to compensate growers within a week: Minister

MULTAN River Chenab was faced with a flooding situation on Friday resulting in the destruction of hundreds of acres of fields. The flood enveloped areas of Shershah, Bosan and Nawabpur among others in South Punjab. The local Assistant Commissioner said that the current water flow at Trimmu Barrage on Chenab river was measured at 54,000 cusec.While downstream water flow was measured at 70,000 cusecs. Provincial Minister for Energy Dr Akhtar Malik paid visit to flood affected areas and said that the government would compensate the losses of growers. He said that help of growers would be made through ‘Insaf assistance Programme’ and added that insaf assistance programme process would commence within a week. He said that wheat and strawberry crops were damaged due to the flood. MPA Malik Saleem Labar and DC Aamer Khattak was also present. DC said that survey of affected revenue circles has been started and a comprehensive report would be sent to government soon. MPA Malik Saleem Labar said that he was stood with people of his constituency during this testing period. He said that district administration was conducing survey despite coronavirus pandemic. Labar said that he would talk to Punjab Chief Minister for getting relief for flood victims. Normal water flow passing through River Chenab and there was no flood situation, Irrigation official sources said on Wednesday. The water came into the river due to outspread unscheduled rains.About 140, 000 cusec water wave recorded at Head Trimmu a day before and it reduced to 80, 000 cusec. There was a normal water flow into the river and it did not came in flood limits, the sources added. The water flow will be reached on normal stage in next one or two days. The all canals of Punjab are closed due to non consumption of water after unscheduled rains. The daily demand of Punjab canals is 120,000 cusec but all the canals are closed because crops are in maturity stage and no demand of more water, they said. Water was available according per demand but there was no consumption of water, the sources added.
