Despite the passage of 17 years, the Sindh High Court has dismissed a petition seeking reinvestigation into the May 12 incident. The court ruled that the petition became ineffective following the police report. During the hearing, the SHO of Quaidabad presented a report related to the petitioner, Iqbal Kazmi. The report revealed that Kazmi had passed away on May 28, 2021.
His death certificate, sent via WhatsApp by his wife and verified by the relevant hospital, led to the dismissal of the petition. In September 2018, the Sindh High Court had ordered the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 12 events and directed the establishment of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT). The court also instructed the Sindh government to set up an inquiry tribunal for the case. The Sindh government had subsequently sought the Chief Justice of Sindh High Court’s guidance on forming the tribunal.
Iqbal Kazmi, who had requested the formation of a judicial commission, faced opposition from the Sindh government. A government lawyer noted that a larger bench of the High Court had deemed the case non-justiciable in 2018, stating that further investigation was unnecessary after the passage of 11 years.
