LAHORE – Students in Lahore and parts of Sindh are enjoying long weekend, starting from today August 24, as there is holiday for schools and colleges on Aug 26.
All schools and colleges used to remain closed on Saturday and Sunday due to two weekly offs in both provinces. However, weekend this time extends to Monday, August 26, due to an official holiday.
Sindh government has announced a holiday for schools and colleges in Karachi and other parts of the province on account of the Chehlum Imam Hussain (R.A) or Arbaeen. The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his devoted companions is observed on 20th of the Islamic month of Safar-ul-Muzaffar with religious reverence to remember their supreme sacrifices for the cause of Islam.
Arbaeen will be marked in Pakistan on August 26 this year.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has announced a local holiday in Lahore on August 26 on the eve of the annual Urs of Ali Hajveri also known as Data Ganj Bakhsh.
Data Ganj Bakhsh’s Urs is annual gathering on anniversary of Hazrat Ali Hajveri – a famous Sufi saint. Ali was a prominent Persian scholar, mystic, and theologian, who played a significant role in the spread of Islam in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in Lahore, Pakistan.

The schools and colleges will reopen in Lahore, Karachi and other cities of Sindh on August 27 after three consecutive holidays.
