Inspector General Sindh, Ghulam NabiMemon, welcomed a 17-member delegation from Lahore Press Club at the Central Police Office on Thursday. The delegation, led by President Muhammad Arshad Ansari, comprised members of the club’s governing body, representatives from media channels, and journalists, including the President of the Pakistan Union of Journalists (PFUJ).
During the meeting, senior police officers, including the DIG Headquarters, AIGs from Administration, Media and Public Relations Wing, Operations, and the Director of Sindh Information Department, were also present. IG Sindh expressed his delight at the visit, saying, “It is a positive step for journalists from one of Pakistan’s largest provinces to visit Sindh.” He acknowledged the challenges the province faces, particularly in urban areas and the Kacha regions. “Like the rest of the world, we face some challenges related to crime,” said Memon.
He emphasized that combating street crime in urban areas and maintaining law and order in the Kacha regions are significant challenges for the Sindh police. Memon noted that criminals often lure people from other provinces into Kacha areas through honey traps, but stringent police checkpoints have helped rescue over 700 citizens from such schemes.
IG Sindh also highlighted the government’s provision of modern weapons to the police and stated that in the past seven months, the Sindh police have eliminated 45 notorious and dangerous dacoits.
He noted a remarkable decrease in street crimes in Karachi, where daily incidents fell from 272 in January to 160 in July. He credited the installation of facial recognition cameras in urban areas for enhancing crime control. As part of the Safe City Project, Memon urged citizens to install cameras around their homes and businesses, revealing that nearly 40,000 cameras have already been installed by residents and businesses across Karachi. In the first phase of the Safe City Project, around 1,200 cameras will be installed city-wide by June next year.
Memon also highlighted the Sindh government’s focus on increasing police resources by redirecting budgets from officer offices to police stations, improving the investigation sector through additional monthly salaries and advance case allowances, and providing health insurance of up to Rs. 1 million to police officers. Lahore Press Club President commended the efforts of the Sindh government in ensuring the safety and welfare of citizens and praised the initiatives aimed at securing peace across the province.
