DHAKA – Situation in Bangladesh remains tensed despite disgraced exit of Sheikh Hasina, as now Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has resigned amid new protests at the Supreme Court.
The protests, led by students and other demonstrators, demanded resignation of top judiciary officials, who according to them were part of Hasina’s autocratic rule.
Chief Jusitce along with group of top judges of apex court stepped down as part of the new administration’s efforts to restructure the judiciary. The protests intensified after Chief Justice Hassan called meeting to review the judiciary’s role under the new government.
Thousands of agitators fliocked at the court, urging removal of Chief Justice and other judges. Student leader Asif Mahmud, now serving as an adviser in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, rallied support for the resignation, accusing the judiciary of bias and demanding a complete overhaul.
The new interim government was established after huge protests that led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and escape.
The protests originated in July over a job quota system seen as favoring those with ties to Hasina’s party. The unrest led to significant violence and over 300 fatalities. Yunus, recognized for his work in microcredit, is now responsible for leading the country through this turbulent period. The interim government is expected to call for elections, but the schedule remains unclear.
Hasina’s Awami League party has not yet indicated a timeline for elections, asserting that any vote without their participation would be unacceptable. Yunus, who had a contentious relationship with Hasina, faces the challenge of navigating the country through ongoing instability while the military assists in restoring order and police operations.
