Polio resurgence

Resurgence of Polio in Punjab, after four years of being Polio-free, marks a significant and distressing setback in ongoing battle against this crippling disease.

The recent confirmation of a six-year-old child contracting the virus in Chakwal district serves as a stark reminder that fight against Polio is far from over.

This case, first in Punjab since 2020, is not an isolated incident but part of a troubling trend that has seen a doubling of Polio cases compared to last year.

The official tally now stands at 12 cases for the year: nine in Balochistan, two in Sindh, and one in Punjab.

This number should set off alarm bells among health authorities and policymakers.

It is imperative that immediate and decisive actions are taken to halt virus’s transmission and prevent further spread.

There is no denying that Polio eradication programme has made remarkable strides over past few years, thanks to unwavering commitment of international partners and heroic efforts of Polio workers.

These workers have shown extraordinary dedication, often in the face of significant challenges, to ensure that every child is vaccinated.

Yet, recent surge in cases indicates that situation is deteriorating, necessitating a thorough re-evaluation and immediate remedial measures to prevent the virus from causing more harm to our children.

It is heartening that no Polio cases have been reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

However, these areas, especially districts bordering Afghanistan, must remain vigilant and focused during vaccination campaigns.

The resurgence of a case in Punjab after four years underscores that no region is completely safe until the virus is eradicated everywhere.

Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq, the Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication, demonstrated exceptional leadership and capability during her previous tenure.

We have high expectations that she will address current challenges with same determination, identifying and closing loopholes in the eradication campaign.

Recent cases not only endanger our children but also tarnish nation’s image.

It is a collective responsibility for all segments of society to contribute to Polio eradication campaign.

The success of this programme hinges on ensuring that no child under the age of five is missed during immunisation campaigns.

Every effort must be made to reach the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations, reinforcing the message that Polio eradication is a national priority.
