Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) initiated a sit-in at Karachi’s Governor House on Saturday, protesting against power outages, high electricity bills, and unjust taxation. Led by Jamat-e-Islami Karachi chief Munim Zafar Khan, the protest calls for the cancellation of anti-people agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), revocation of K-Electric’s license, and a reduction in taxes on salaried individuals, traders, children’s milk, and stationery. The protest, which began with a march from Masjid Khizra to the Governor House, saw participation from traders, laborers, religious scholars, teachers, students, doctors, engineers, lawyers, journalists, and other sectors.
The demonstrators carried banners and placards demanding cheaper electricity, relief from oppressive taxes, and the completion of the K-IV water project. They also called for taxing landlords and the elite. Munem Zafar Khan emphasized that the sit-in will continue until their demands are met. He criticized the federal government, including parties like the PML-N, PPP, and MQM, for their role in the agreements with K-Electric and the failure to provide basic amenities like water and electricity.
Jamat-e-Islami Karachi chief Munim Zafar Khan highlighted that 78 lakh children in Sindh are deprived of education and condemned the imposition of taxes on essential items. The protest is a continuation of the sit-in led by JI’s central leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman in Rawalpindi, expressing solidarity with the ongoing demonstrations. The sit-in participants chanted slogans such as “Cancel K-Electric’s license,” “End unjust taxes,” and “Provide water to Karachi.”
