Senior Minister for Sindh, SharjeelInamMemon, praised the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for its unwavering support for press freedom and the media despite facing intense media trials. Speaking at a ceremony organized by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Memon highlighted the exemplary efforts made by the PPP for journalists’ welfare and press freedom.
Memon recalled that when Asif Ali Zardari first became President, he took notable steps for the welfare of journalists and media workers, a commitment unparalleled by any other party. He emphasized that the PPP has always advocated for the freedom and well-being of journalists and has shown remarkable patience despite facing media scrutiny.
Memon acknowledged that any issue faced by journalists is promptly addressed by the Sindh government, crediting former Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and current Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for their support. He stressed that the Sindh government’s mindset is to resolve any problems faced by journalists quickly. Addressing the challenge of decreasing newspaper readership, Memon urged media outlets to expand their reach and expressed concern about the growing influence of social media.
He urged journalists to report responsibly, avoiding content that could harm the nation. Memon lauded the PPP’s tolerance during media trials from 2008 to 2013, noting that despite false stories and misreporting, the party refrained from retaliatory actions. He stressed the importance of responsible journalism and the need for unity in addressing national challenges. He urged political parties to set aside differences and unite for the country’s benefit, citing Asif Ali Zardari’s example of engaging even with his staunchest opponents for dialogue. Memon also emphasized the role of journalists in educating the public and fostering national unity. Memon urged the media to take an active role in bridging divides and promoting unity, and reiterated the PPP’s commitment to standing up for press freedom.
