ISLAMABAD – A medium to high-level flood has been expected in Rivers Jhelum, Kabul, Chenab, and Kabul from July 30 to August 4 as the country is witnessing massive rains, Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) said.
The federal agency issued warning for potential medium to high-level flooding in major rivers along with the nullahs (catchments) of the River Ravi from this week.
As per recent report, there is a risk of low to medium flooding in the River Indus at Tarbela, hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan Division, and nullahs in Zhob, Sibbit, Nasirabad, and Kalat Division during this timeframe.
It said River Indus at Tarbela is witnessing low flood conditions, while other rivers in the Indus River System are having normal flow. FFC said the country’s major reservoirs are filled to 63.38pc of their capacity, leaving 36.62pc available for potential peak discharge.
Under current weather situaiton, a major Westerly Wave is hovering over Northern Afghanistan, and a seasonal low pressure is positioned over Northwestern region of Pakistan.
There is forecasted interaction between Westerly Wave and the monsoon winds this week, which may intensify further. Moderate moist air currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are extending into the upper Pakistan.
As per Met Office, monsoon spell may generate flash flooding in local nullahs, and streams of Kashmir, parts of Punjab, upper KP, Koh Sulaiman and adjoining hilly areas of northeast Balochistan on 29th and 30th July.
Urban flooding may also occur in the low-lying areas of northeast/south Punjab, Peshawar, Karachi including lower Sindh during the forecast period.
