Family favouritism!

I am writing this letter to all Pakistanis about a fundamental problem that is wasting everyone’s talent and causing many to give up: nepotism. Nepotism involves involving family members, friends, neighbours, and other relatives in politics and special activities. We have been facing this issue since the independence of Pakistan. Despite its significance, none of us are taking it seriously. Although people talk about it, no one takes any action. While the majority are aware of its effects, only a few are not.

In my view, our country and its people are falling behind because of this issue. Talented and qualified individuals are not being given opportunities, while those with less knowledge and skills are advancing. Moreover, it is clear that corruption can completely destroy the development of the country. Since capable people are not being promoted, they resort to corruption to advance themselves, making corruption increasingly common.

As a result, people are becoming frustrated, and many are giving up because they believe that hard work will not lead to recognition or advancement. This is inequality, and when people raise their voices for their rights, they are misunderstood. When protests occur, the response is to ask for patience. This is not fair. All people need to raise their voices against this issue, and the government must take action to address it.

Brain drain

in Pakistan

Brain drain refers to the departure of highly skilled and well-educated individuals from a country, a significant misfortune for any nation. Every year, a considerable number of Pakistani youth leave the country to pursue better opportunities, and this number keeps increasing due to the lack of opportunities at home. Last year, according to a survey by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), 67% of Pakistani youth wished to leave the country. This trend has been ongoing since 1971 and sadly persists. This year, a report indicated that over 200,000 people left Pakistan in the first four months of 2024—a staggering number.

Several factors contribute to the loss of skilled and qualified individuals in Pakistan, with economic and political instability being major causes. Skyrocketing inflation endangers lives and increases the suicide rate. Inadequate pay, security concerns, tribal clashes leading to the killing of Ph.D. holders, extremism, lynching, animal cruelty, sectarian violence, unemployment, rampant corruption, disregard for merit, violation of rights, and a feudal mindset further contribute to widespread dejection. This compels the youth to emigrate, exacerbating brain drain. Foreign investors are also hesitant to invest more.

Student motivation

Motivation is an essential element for the younger generation, especially students in Pakistan. Unfortunately, many students face demotivation due to constant comparisons with their peers. This overlooks the fact that everyone has unique abilities and skills. What students need most is motivation to advance in life.

The prevalent culture of comparison strips students of hope and confidence. As responsible members of society, it is crucial to discourage such comparisons. Every individual plays a vital role in societal development and other community tasks. Appreciating each person for their unique contribution can significantly boost morale and productivity.

Consider a company where the CEO actively motivates the employees. The workers, in turn, channel their energy into their tasks with increased enthusiasm. This is because motivation drives people to achieve success. Similarly, if students are motivated, they will work harder. This effort is critical, as these students represent the future of the country. Their motivation and hard work will contribute to the economic growth and development that Pakistan needs.

Beyond business school

It’s observed that women, especially, struggle to excel in the corporate world despite a high ratio of female students in business schools. Why do we see such a steep decline in their work ethic? One of the primary reasons is their dual responsibilities. When a woman has a child, she is often solely blamed for childcare, which should be a mutual responsibility. This additional burden leads to guilt and emotional trauma, impacting her productivity.

Our upbringing fosters comparisons, and women do this unintentionally, affecting their work. Interviewers often ask women if they are married, and if so, their chances of being hired decrease, as employers fear reduced productivity post-childbirth. This indicates that our corporate culture doesn’t support new mothers. Cultural aspects significantly impact women’s careers.

To help women excel, it’s not enough to have a degree; they need good social skills. Participating in communication classes can build confidence, portraying them as assertive professionals. Visibility is crucial—if a woman works hard but lacks the confidence to showcase her achievements, how will people know? Women must stand out, maintain their mental and physical health and be confident. These often-underrated social skills are essential for success.
