Red Zone blocked as Islamabad braces for JI, PTI massive protests

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s capital city Islamabad saw aggressive security deployment and now authorities sealed Red Zone with containers ahead of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) sit-in at D-Chowk and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest against inflated electricity bills.

The federal and provincial governments imposed Section 144 in the region from July 26 to 28, restrcing all kinds of public gatherings, and political power shows amid ‘terrorism threats’.

Jamaat e Islami Secretary General also reported police raids on party leaders’ residences in bid to disrupt the protest, with incidents of arrests and mistreatment.

Islamabad Protests

Amid police high handedness, Jamaat Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman warned government against preventing their protest, emphasizing their right to peaceful resistance.

Meanwhile, convoys from across Pakistan are joining the sit-in, which aims to represent the public’s concerns. The police have arrested several JI officials, including the driver of JI’s central secretary general.
