KARACHI – Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has announced providing free electricity to consumers using up to 100 units per month and free solar systems to off-grid consumers.
CM Murad made this announcement during a meeting at the Chief Minister’s House where various proposals were discussed. The meeting was attended by Minister for Energy, Power and Development Nasir Shah, Advisor to the Chief Minister on Cooperatives Ismail Mazzari, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Agha Waqar, Energy Secretary Musadik Khan, and others.
The provincial energy minister said that approximately 800,000 households are using 50 megawatts of electricity per month, adding that out of them 441,483 fall in domain of K-Electric, 229,338 in HESCO, and 125,500 in SEPCO jurisdictions.
Similarly, there are 1.9 million households using 100 megawatts of electricity per month, including 1,054,000 in Karachi (KE), 566,427 in Hyderabad region (HESCO), and 356,073 in Sukkur region (SEPCO).
It was also informed to the chief minister that there are 2.6 million off-grid households, out of which 500,000 households will be provided with solar home systems (SHS) in the first phase.
For these consumers, a 100-watt solar home system is sufficient as it can run three LED bulbs, a 35-watt DC fan, and mobile charging ports, with a 6-hour battery backup.
The minister said the cost of a solar home system is approximately Rs50,000, adding that the scheme will cost Rs25 billion.
This comprehensive initiative aims to address energy challenges in Sindh and promote sustainable energy solutions across the province.
