LONDON –  Shabana Mahmood, a Member of Parliament, has made history by being sworn in as the first female Muslim Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom.

The ceremony took place with Mahmood taking her oath on the holy Quran,  and made a significant milestone in British political history.

According to the British media, Mahmood, who is of Pakistani origin, expressed both pride and a sense of responsibility upon assuming her new role.

“This responsibility is both a privilege and a burden,” she remarked. “It will open doors for future generations.”

Mahmood highlighted her unique position as the first Lord Chancellor who could speak Urdu.

She committed to defending the international rule of law and upholding human rights.

She said that the judiciary must make decisions free from political pressure and undue influence.

This appointment is seen as a progressive step for diversity and inclusion in the UK’s political landscape, and is inspiring for many within and beyond the Muslim community.
